New at Annie's: Charley Harper

Charles Harper (1922-2007) was a Cincinnati-based artist who made more than 50 designs for conservation groups and national parks throughout the U.S. Describing his own work, he once said, “I don’t try to put everything in, I try to leave everything out.” Annie's is happy to feature his artwork in our windows this month, in addition to carrying cards, calendars, and puzzles in the store.

Shelly Engels will be exhibiting her architectural photographs on aluminum this month at Annie’s. She is a self-taught artist from Ballard who pushes the elements of traditional photography, using both film and digital media to create her beautiful textural pieces. The use of aluminum instead of photo paper provides a sheen and layers of depth. The metal also enhances the surface inequalities of the architectural relief, which is her subject matter. Come view these intriguing and beautiful photographs and meet the artist!

Pacific Northwest artist Patti Shaw will present her small portraits, painted and drawn on cloth, in an enormous collection of cameo faces running the gamut from whimsical to unsettling.

Shaw has an extinsive list of exhibitions and publications, including museums and private galleries around the country, and resource books and journals for fiber artists and collectors. The artist will be in attendance at the opening reception.

Annie's presents our first holiday retrospective exhibition, combining the work of most of the artists who have exhibited here this year and the work of Annie's employees. Fourteen artists will have original work for sale ranging in price from $5 to $100, and most work will be pre-matted to standard sizes or framed! Paintings, drawings, silk-screen, intaglio, and linocut prints, photography, sculpture, and functional ceramics will all be here! A significant break from his landscapes on canvas, these dynamic drawings in charcoal incorporate a subtle grayscale combined with expressive linework. Katrina Whitney - September Artwalk

This month, Annies will be featuring the work of Katrina Whitney. Her whimsical 3-dimensional collages on antique wooden drawers and found objects are rich in color and texture and varied in subject. She describes her work as containing,

"...relics of the past within a menagerie of animals, apparitions, and objects which capture the nostalgia of (my) formative experiences. Collage is not often a medium associated with minimalism, but (I am) drawn to this aesthetic and try to avoid the typical busy and sentimental pitfalls. Whether the content is kitschy and humorous, or somber and serious, it is (my) approach and techniques that give the work continuity. The treatments, paint colors, and found imagery may have an antique appeal, but the compostiions are decidedly simple, clean, and modern."

This month, we are excited to share the work of Susan Martin, local artist and employee at Annie's Art and Frame. Inspired by the richly textured surfaces of the abandoned bunkers at Fort Worden outside of Port Townsend, Susan Martin's work features extreme close-up views of the rusted and faded pipes, walls, ceilings, and floors. The surfaces, realistically rendered in charcoal, pencil, and acrylic paint, give the impression of an organically textured abstract when viewed without background imagery. Her subjects and the technique of her work will appeal to both the lovers of photo-realism and abstract art, while her compositions' sizes (ranging from 6" square to 24" long), make her work accessible to everyone. Come and enjoy this original concept beautifully executed!

This month, Annie's is pleased to exhibit two artists. On our Artwalk wall, Portland artist Cathie Joy Young will display her beautifully rich paintings, while Seattle artist Barbara Dunshee's sculptural and functional ceramics will be featured in our front windows.

Barbara's porcelain sculptures runs the gamut of the whimisical to the enigmatic, with disembodied faces and crowned babies contributing to a highly original and inspired body of work. Also featured in our side window will be her brilliantly colored functional and decorative ceramic vessels.

Cathie Joy's interpretive visions of faces, figures, and animals are described as "...primal, atmospheric dreamscapes. (They) feel like directly transmitted dreams, almost like fairy tales or nursery rhymes, peaceful but discordant enough to be curious, to feel like inquiries or investigations of mystery." -Erica Steiner

Yoshi Nakagawa

Come and enjoy the beautiful organic prints of Yoshi Nakagawa, landscape artist and printmaker. Working in a range of printmaking techniques from Chin colle and relief to intaglio, her prints focus on natural subjects garnered from her experience in sustainable agriculture. Her use of the textures and patterns of the natural world make her depictions of simple subjects in everyday lives both momentous and endearing.
